West Palm Beach, Florida Real Estate
West Palm Beach is one of the largest cities in Florida and one of the oldest as well. Best known for its upscale homes and luxury properties, the city is popular with both older shoppers and those looking for homes for young families. No matter what type of West Palm Beach FL homes strike your fancy, you'll find the perfect place.
A Brief History
This area was originally approached by Juan Ponce de Leon, who encountered native tribes such as the Mayaimi, the Jaega and the Ais. Other native Amnericans moved in later, including the Seminoles and the Miccosukee Indians. The area that was to become West Palm Beach was settled in the late 1870s and 1880s by a few hundred settlers who called the vicinity "Lake Worth Country." The original spelling of the city was "Westpalmbeach," which was later amended, and the town was incorporated in 1894. West Palm Beach grew rapidly during the Florida land boom of the 1920s, and enjoyed a second expansion with the advent of air conditioning in the 1950s. Many notable personalities have ties to West Palm Beach including Jimmy Buffett, Tommy Lee Jones, Glenn Close, and Palm Beach High alums Burt Reynolds and George Hamilton.
Wide Range of Schools
No matter how old your children are, you'll find a handful of great schools within the city limits. The School District of Palm Beach County maintains all the local elementary, junior high and high schools, including a large magnet school, and the area is also home to several private schools. Three major colleges are also in West Palm Beach: Palm Beach Atlantic University, Northwood University and Keiser University.
