A Brief History
Prior to development, this land was the province of cattle and pine forests. The idea of Palm Beach Gardens, upscale community, was the vision of John D. MacArthur. This wealthy insurance executive donated $2 million to the development in 1964. His insistence on a unique setting where people who could raise their families drew the interest of the PGA tour. In the early 1970s, the PGA began playing an annual golf tournament there. Although the tournament was discontinued shortly thereafter, the town continues to grow steadily each decade. Fun facts: John D. MacArthur was the brother of American playwright Charles MacArthur (
